Tip #457: Get your icons here

When adding custom entities to Microsoft Dynamics CRM, adding icons for you entities is an important fit and finish detail. However, finding the right icon in the right size can sometimes be a challenge.

Here are two of my favorite resources for finding flat icons that generally look good in CRM 2015.

www.flaticons.net Includes 2,500 free flat icons available in the size and color of your choice, as well as an icon maker.

https://icons8.com 15,400 free flat icons in any format, size, and color

Between these two sites, you can find just about any icon you want. Got any others to recommend? Post them in the comments.

I agree that implementations that leave the default, redundant icons for custom entities look unprofessional.
http://www.fatcow.com/free-icons is another one I’ve used a lot and they’re already in 16 and 32 pixel sizes.
It usually takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish to add an icon. The Iconator in the xRM Toolbox also helps to manage icons easily.

I usually use Syncfusions MetroStudio http://www.syncfusion.com/downloads/metrostudio
This is an is a collection of over 4,000 Metro-style icon templates that can be easily customized to create thousands of unique Metro icons.

Note that may sites like Icons8 actually have a requirement for linkback in their licensing terms at https://icons8.com/license/. The way I read this it makes them unsuitable for CRM from a legal standpoint. Sites like findicons.com and iconarchive.com let you view these license requirements per icon pack to make sure linkback is not a requirement before using their icons.

In case you are wondering, the grey colour for the 16×16 entity icon is RGB 102 102 102 and Hex 666666. You’re welcome Joel.
