Dynamics 365 2020 Wave 1 introduces a more modern work hour calendar that makes it much easier to quickly update your employees work hours for field service.

In today’s video, Business Applications MVP’s Shawn Tabor and Scott Lefante demonstrate how to update work hours in the new work hour calendar.

It’s 100% using same ancient deprecated scheduling engine from CRM 4.0. UI is OK now, but API is still terrible.

And it still lacks flexibility. It is common to work 24 hours and then have 2 day offs (or 2 x 3 schedules) for field or service roles who used to work at night or have longer shifts. This scenarios are still not covered, but in some cases can be achieved programmatically

This is for scheduling technicians to work orders etc. it has some additional features and also is used for templates for PSA etc.

We desperately need Microsoft to grasp the concept that there are lots of organisations out there working shift patterns. Some of these set shifts for employees for up to a year in advance. Shift management is an extremely complex yet common requirement which Dynamics still doesn’t come close to handling. If you had to use Dynamics to schedule hundreds or thousands of employees on multiple shift patterns over a year, you would be happier pulling your own finger nails out with pliers.
